Project: Build an SEO Plan for a Local Business

Put it all together — create a complete, step-by-step SEO plan for a real local business.

What you will learn

  • Combine keyword, on-page, technical, off-page and local SEO into one plan
  • Produce real artifacts: a keyword table, meta tags and a checklist
  • Set goals you can measure

What you will build

In this project you will write a full SEO plan for one local business. We will use Sweet Crumbs, the Lucknow bakery, as the running example — but do it for any real shop you like. By the end you will have a document you could genuinely hand to a business owner.

Step 1 — Understand the business and goal

Start by writing down the basics. A clear goal keeps the whole plan focused.

  • Business: Sweet Crumbs, an eggless bakery in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow.
  • Customers: local people ordering birthday and party cakes.
  • Goal: in 3 months, rank in the local pack for eggless cake Gomti Nagar and double organic orders.

Step 2 — Keyword research

List the keywords to target, with their intent. Start with easy, ready-to-buy long-tail terms (from the keyword lesson).

KeywordIntentPriority

Step 3 — Plan the pages and on-page SEO

Match one keyword to one page, and write the title and meta description for the most important page.

The main money page with its URL, title, description and H1
Page URL: sweetcrumbs.in/eggless-birthday-cakes
<title>Eggless Birthday Cakes in Gomti Nagar - Sweet Crumbs</title>
<meta name="description" content="Order fresh eggless birthday cakes in Gomti Nagar with same-day delivery. Custom designs from Rs 499. 100% veg.">
<h1>Eggless Birthday Cakes in Gomti Nagar</h1>

Note: Notice every on-page lesson coming together: a clean URL with hyphens, a keyword-first <title> under 60 characters, a benefit-rich <meta> description under 155 (with a ₹499 price hook), and a clear <h1>. Each target keyword should get its own page built exactly like this.

Step 4 — Technical SEO checklist

  • Site loads in under 3 seconds (test with PageSpeed Insights).
  • Pages are mobile-friendly — most cake orders come from phones.
  • A sitemap exists and is submitted in Search Console.
  • The site uses https (the padlock).

Step 5 — Local SEO actions

  1. Claim and fully complete the Google Business Profile (category: Bakery).
  2. Use one consistent NAP everywhere online.
  3. Add 10+ photos of real cakes and the shop.
  4. Ask the next 10 happy customers for a Google review and reply to each.

Step 6 — Off-page SEO

  • Get listed in trusted Lucknow business directories.
  • Earn a link from a local food blog by offering a real story or tasting.
  • Partner with a nearby party-supplies shop for a mutual mention.

Step 7 — Measure and review

Decide how you will check progress, using the metrics lesson. Set up Google Search Console on day one, and use a UTM link for anything you share off-site (Instagram, WhatsApp) so you can see which channel sends real visitors.

Tracking link for the Instagram bio:

Note: This turns your plan into something measurable. The table gives every goal a number and a place to check it; the UTM link lets Analytics tell you that, say, 40 visitors came from Instagram this month. Review these each month and adjust what is not working.

Your tasks

  • Pick a real local business and complete all 7 steps for it.
  • Produce four artifacts: a keyword table, the title and meta for the main page, a technical and local checklist, and one UTM tracking link.
  • Set three or more measurable goals, each with a start number, a target, and where you will check it.
  • Write a short first-month action list of what to do first.

Tip: Work top to bottom and keep it realistic. A small, finished plan a business could actually follow is far more valuable than a huge wish list. Add this plan to your portfolio.

Watch out: Avoid every shortcut you learned to dodge: no keyword stuffing, no bought links, no fake reviews. A clean plan built on helpful content and honest links is what wins and lasts.

Q. In an SEO plan, why match each target keyword to its own page?

Answer: One focused page per keyword lets you fully satisfy that search intent with a matching title, content and URL, instead of one page trying to do everything weakly.

✍️ Practice

  1. Complete Steps 1 and 2 (business, goal, and a 5-row keyword table) for a real local shop.
  2. Write the title tag and meta description for that shop’s most important page.

🏠 Homework

  1. Finish all 7 steps into a one-page SEO plan for your chosen business, including 3 measurable goals.
