Building a Simple Social Strategy

A strategy is just three clear answers: what is your goal, what will you post about, and in what format.

What you will learn

  • Set one clear social media goal
  • Create 3-4 content pillars
  • Match the right format to your platform

Strategy is not scary

A social media strategy sounds fancy, but it is really three simple answers written down before you post:

  1. Goal — what do you want? (more followers, more website visits, more orders)
  2. Content pillars — what topics will you post about, again and again?
  3. Format — photos, Reels, Stories? And which platform?

Step 1 — pick ONE goal

Choose a single, clear goal. A vague goal like grow online is useless. A sharp goal like get 30 cake orders a month from Instagram tells you exactly what to do.

Step 2 — choose content pillars

Content pillars are 3-4 topics you keep returning to, so you never run out of ideas and your page feels consistent. Think of pillars like the sections of a newspaper — sport, news, weather, opinion. A newspaper never wonders what to print: it just fills its regular sections. Your pillars do the same job for your page.

Here are pillars for our Lucknow bakery:

PillarWhy it worksExample post

Behind the scenesBuilds trust & warmthReel of icing being piped
Customer loveProof others buyA happy birthday customer photo
Tips & funKeeps it shareableHow to store a cake in summer

With four pillars you always know what to post next — just rotate through them. No more staring at a blank screen.

Step 3 — match format to platform

Now put all three answers on one page. The little plan below shows the goal at the top, the pillars in the middle, and then each format with a note on what it is best for. Read it top to bottom — it is the whole strategy in six short lines:

A one-page strategy: goal + pillars + formats
Goal: 30 cake orders / month from Instagram
Pillars: Product · Behind the scenes · Customer love · Tips
Formats:
Reels -> reach new people (short, fun videos)
Photos -> show off the cakes (high quality)
Stories -> daily updates, polls, order reminders

Note: This little plan is your whole strategy on one page. The goal keeps you focused, the pillars give you endless ideas, and the formats tell you HOW to post on Instagram. You can write the same three lines for any platform.

Tip: On Instagram, Reels reach new people, while photos and Stories serve the followers you already have. Use Reels to grow, and photos plus Stories to keep your community warm.

Q. What are content pillars?

Answer: Content pillars are 3-4 themes you return to again and again. They keep your page focused and mean you never run out of ideas.

✍️ Practice

  1. Write one sharp goal for a Lucknow clothing boutique (use a real number).
  2. Create 4 content pillars for that boutique with one example post each.

🏠 Homework

  1. Build a one-page strategy (goal, 4 pillars, formats) for any business you choose. Keep it to a single page.
